The Department of Almost Finished Has Announced Its Grand Opening

Town officials insist the ribbon-cutting ceremony is 97 percent complete, pending a final decision about the remaining three percent.

In an announcement described as “practically historic,” the town council unveiled the Department of Almost Finished on Thursday, promising to bring overdue projects, half-written reports, and nearly repaired sidewalks under one convenient administrative roof.

“We’re not saying the work is done,” explained Interim Completion Coordinator D. Mercer. “We’re saying the work is close enough to done to deserve a department.”

Officials distributed certificates of provisional accomplishment to residents who had assembled most of a bookshelf, drafted the opening paragraph of a novel, or remembered to buy the replacement lightbulb but had not yet installed it.

The department’s first order of business was to construct a sign announcing its own existence. The sign arrived without the final letter. A public hearing has been scheduled to determine whether the missing letter constitutes an unfinished project or an opportunity for community participation.

Local shopkeeper Hattie Quill, who repairs clothing rather than convening committees about its repair, offered to stitch the letter into place. Her offer was referred to the Subcommittee on Unsolicited Solutions.

Meanwhile, an ambitious proposal to paint the town’s crosswalks stalled after officials discovered the road-painting crew had already painted them during the meeting.

“This creates a serious accounting issue,” said Mercer. “We had budgeted for progress, not completion.”

At press time, the department’s grand opening remained on hold because nobody could agree who should cut the ribbon. The ribbon itself had been cut yesterday by the custodian while clearing the doorway.

THE FLYER’S EDITORIAL OBSERVATION: There’s a difference between honoring unfinished work and building an institution to keep it unfinished. Sometimes the most revolutionary act is to pick up the screwdriver and finish the shelf.
